SMS Chocolate Malted Layer Cake

Too much chocolate?!? As a card carrying member of Chocoholic's Anonymous, I didn't think is was possible, but this Chocolate Malted Layer Cake was uber-rich and uber-chocolately and almost too much.

A rich chocolate cake made with both unsweetened chocolate and cocoa powder is filled and covered with a chocolate ganache frosting that includes malt powder to mimic the flavor of a chocolate malt. Whoppers candies top the cake and add another level of chocolate malt flavor and crunch. The cake is rich, moist and fantastic on its own. Delicious and perfect for licking from the spoon, the chocolate ganache was my favorite part of the recipe. However, it was incredibly runny and difficult to work with which is why my cake lookes especially sloppy. I should have refrigereated it a little longer to get it to a more spreadable consistency. Also, I had quite a bit left over, but I'm not complaining! My original plan was to stud the top of the cake with whole Whoppers for a crown like effect, but the frosting was too soft and they kept rolling off reminding me of Humpty Dumpty falling off his wall. So I opted to give them a rough chop.

This cake is delicious but a little goes a loooong way. A lot of the other SMSers made cupcakes, and that is probably the perfect size for a dessert this rich.

Thanks to Nicole of Sweet Tooth for hosting this week! You can find the full recipe on her blog and see what the other SMS bakers did here.

  1. Beautiful! I love the chopped malted milk balls on the top. I gave these away because of how many I thought I might eat if I kept them at home.

  4. I love how you chopped up your malted milk balls. I think some chopped between the layers would be great too! :)

  6. The cake looks yummy! I had the same issues with the frosting, gloppy but good. I agree that cupcakes were probably the way to go with this recipe.

  7. It looks great! Very majestic. And the frosting is a little challenging but popping it in the fridge did seem to firm it up nicely. A thin layer was definitely all that was needed! R x
