Onions and onions

Today was a hectic day at work and I wasn't up for fixing a big meal. We ate fast food last night so I decided to fix another one of my standbys and try a new recipe. I love the magazines and shows for America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Country. I always enjoy the results of their recipes but the number of steps to prepare a 'simple' dish can be frustrating. But a recent show featuring oven fried onion rings led me to ignore the usual steps of 'prepare this,' 'preheat that,' use three sheet pans and five bowls, and try another one of their recipes. Once again, the results were fantastic. Crisp, crunchy, flavorful onion rings that really were simple to fix but did take a little time and dirty a lot of dishes.

The Cook's Country website requires membership (=money) to their website, but I found the recipe at Visit this site even if you aren't interested in the recipe. I work with a lot of engineers and the level of detail is dead-on engineer and hilarious.

I also fixed Onion Burgers. A favorite in my house and another not-really-cooking-but-assembly recipe. The picture is not great (I promise - I'm working on my food styling and photography!) but the plates were empty!

Onion Burgers

1 pound ground beef

4 tablespoons flour

1 can french onion soup

Hamburger buns

1. Brown ground beef. Drain and return to pan.

2. Sprinkle flour over ground beef, stir and cook for a minute or so.

3. Stir in soup. Cook until thickened slightly.

4. Put mayo on buns, add burger mixture and serve.
