Baked Sunday Mornings - Cowboy Cookies

I love cookies. I especially love cookies that combine chocolate chips, oatmeal, nuts, and maybe a little coconut thrown in. These are my absolute faves. I didn't know that chocolate chip-oatmeal cookies are sometimes referred to as Cowboy Cookies until I read this week's Baked Sunday Mornings recipe.

Lately, whenever I have the urge to bake, which is often, I will look at what's on my cooking groups' schedules and make something from there. I'm a big fan of the killing two birds with one stone philosophy and will bake ahead to stay on top of things and simultaneously satisfy my sweet tooth. However, I kept putting off making these cookies. I was disappointed that they omitted nuts, and unsure about the inclusion of pretzels even after making a cookie recipe a while back that included pretzels and was fantastic. Just couldn't get excited about these.

I decided to bite the bullet (thought I would throw in a cowboy reference) and make these as written. As I have mentioned before, the outcome of a cookie can often be determined by the taste of the raw dough. Nutless and pretzel-filled, this dough was delicious and I found myself anxious to get these baked.

After resting as required, I scooped out the first pan and pressed them down slightly as written. I tossed all of the pretzels directly into the dough rather than pressing some onto the tops. The first problem I ran into was that the cookies baked unevenly. I didn't press down the next batch hoping this would help them bake more evenly but I continued to have some cookies ooze and get too flat and crispy and other not spread and stay pale. I don't experience this problem with other recipes and I even moved the pans around so I don't think it was an issue with my oven.

The next problem, and this is a bigger one, is that this just didn't taste all that good. I don't know how that's possible when butter, chocolate, and oats are involved but apparently it is. We ate a few out of the oven and then I ended up tossing most of them a few days later.

I'm anxious to see what the other Baked bakers thought of these cookies to see if the recipe may be a bit flawed or if this cowgirl just messed up!

  1. Always sad to hear of wasted cookies! I wonder why - did the resting result in oats getting mushy because of the eggs?

  2. sucks that yours didn't turn out! what a bummer. i had a lot of the raw cookie dough too, and had to convinced myself to bake them, and not to leave them raw :)

  4. I'm so sorry you didn't like these when you baked them. I didn't press mine either because I added all the pretzels in the dough, but since I made them larger I baked them a little longer, so I don't know if that would have made a difference or not. They look pretty on your pretty pink plate though!

  6. Bummer that you didn't enjoy these -- they weren't my favorite either, but then again, it's hard for me not to like any sort of oatmeal chocolate chip cookie!

  7. I did not do the resting...it is hot in AZ and my house stays about 84^ and with the oven going it gets hotter. Since the recipe calls for not-room-temp butter I thought I'd better move quickly. And I changed out cocoa powder for the coffee because I'm not a coffee person. I just threw all the pretzels into the mix, non on top. I think keeping the cookies rounded without flattening them also kept the insides more gooey...and yes, the dough was good so maybe that helped my cookies to stay good because the inside was the best part. I am so sorry these cookies did not turn out for you but I am glad to know a cookie loving kindred spirit.
